What Are ICC Rankings?
ICC Rankings are the official global benchmark for tracking performance of teams and players across Test, ODI, and T20I formats.
There are two key types: Team Rankings (by format) and Player Rankings (batting, bowling, all‑round).
How the ICC Ranking System Works
Team Rankings
- Developed by David Kendix, this system assigns points to teams for each match and series. Win → more points, draw/tie → share of points based on opposition strength. Recent matches carry greater weight; lesser weight for older games (typically past 3–4 years). Scaling ensures fairness across teams with differing scheduled fixtures.
Player Rankings
- Each player accumulates points for batting and bowling through a sophisticated algorithm that factors in match context, opponent quality, match result, and recency. These are averaged on a 0–1000 scale. All‑rounder rankings are calculated by combining batting and bowling scores mathematically.
- No human judgment: ratings are entirely driven by performance data. Field conditions, opposition strength, and match importance (e.g., World Cup) all play a role.
- Rankings are updated weekly after every international fixture.
